Bravestarr-Partners in Crime

Description

I'm still sad that apparently no one's watched Bravestarr. Easily one of the best things Filmation has ever done (and yes, that includes Master of the Universe), and yet there's like no fanart of it. So what if it had rotoscoping? Still a great show!

Thunderstick (the robot) and Outlaw Scuzz/Skuzz (the chainsmoking prairie person) from Bravestarr, a cartoon in the 80's done by the ever-infamous Filmation. I saw there was no fanart of these two just hanging out so I decided to create some myself.

One of the things I love about that show is the fact that the members of Tex Hex's gang all have preferences of who they'll work with. Only rarely where they'll do the Fearsome Five thing where everyone in the Hexagon is working on the same project; certain villains will only work with certain villains. Thunderstick will work with any member of the Hexagon, but Scuzz clearly has favorites and refuses to work with certain people like Vipra and Sandstorm.

But no one in the show, at least as far as villains are concerned, are as chummy as these two. Normally, when you have the two bumbling henchmen, they hate each other and try to constantly outdo the other. Not these two. There is seriously an episode where Scuzz and Thunderstick aren't even on any mission and they're hanging around Fort Kerium, making fun of this random stranger because he has no gun and happens to be carrying dolls for his daughter like a sissy. You really get the sense that these two are the best of friends.

Which sort of makes sense. Scuzz is the mechanic of the group, but absolutely sucks in combat. Thunderstick is probably the best fighter in the Hexagon next to Tex Hex and Stampede, but he's a robot and probably breaks down. One happens to be one of the only robots to rebel against serving mankind, and the other happens to be the only prairie person to turn to a life of crime. They complete each other.

This picture took way too long. I can tell because my wrist feels very tender now. I'm unsure if I really like or really hate the background because I keep changing my mind as far as it's concerned. I tried to imitate the backgrounds from the show but I'm not sure how well I succeeded.

Also tried to make it look A) sun-soaked with deeper shadows and B) there being a specific light source. Key word being "tried" here. XD

And ironically, even though I spent a lot more time with this background than this picture, I still like that background more. Go figure.

Oh, and Thunderstick took FOREVER to draw. Oddly, I kept worrying about his overly detailed head until I actually drew it out; it was his silly coat I had problems with.

Will try to draw more characters from this show. Even know I'm sure I'd botch him up, I kind of want to take a shot at drawing Tex Hex.

-----

And just in case you're curious and want to look this up, episodes where they pair off together are (and these are just episodes I can remember off the top of my head):

"An Older Hand"
"No Drums, No Trumpets"
"The Haunted Shield"
"The Witnesses"
"Balance of Power"
"Eyewitnesses" (no, I didn't list the same episode twice, some of the episodes had similar names)

Disclaimer: Thunderstick and Outlaw Scuzz/Skuzz were owned by Filmation until they folded. Now they're owned by Classic Media.
