LOZ:ST - Going Somewhere, Princess? by Turquoisephoenix LOZ:ST - Going Somewhere, Princess? by Turquoisephoenix
"Out for a leisurely stroll, your Highness? Tsk, tsk, tsk! You know that’s not allowed!"
--------

Well done. You just lost the tutorial level.

Guess who's replaying Spirit Tracks?

And like Tubba Blubba, I kind of drew this because my previous drawings of this guy fill me with horror and shame.

My favorite Zelda character (well, second fave. My main favorite is the half-mummy man locked in a closet that's planning to eat his daughter) is an evil demon leprechaun with a high pitched voice. I'm the worst fan in the world.

After drawing that one picture with Chancellor Candy, I had to draw Chancellor Cole from The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for real, especially since nintendo-fc is having a contest where I'm considering entering with a Malladus!Puppet Zelda picture. I find it funny that basically my Zelda fanart is basically just drawings of this one guy when most of the fandom doesn't even really like said guy. I blame the fact that I like short angry men with sharp teeth.

I always found it kind of weird that Batreaux in Skyward Sword had wings but Chancellor Cole didn’t even though they’re both the same species. I mean, I guess you could say it's like the Zoras in that there's multiple branches of the same race, but still. What became a speculation doodle (what if Cole’s demon form had wings and sharp claws like Batreaux instead of just the horns?) went a little too far and became sort of like an alternate version of the opening cutscene, complete with beefed up demonic reveal. Purple smoke and hats flying off just seemed a bit...anti-climactic, especially considering how "subtle" Chancellor Cole was being with his evilness. If you're gonna be evil, go all out.

My theory is that Cole just prefers to levitate and teleport because teleportation doesn't shred 250 rupee coats the way wings do. Well done, Cole. You just blew a hole in a perfectly good outfit.

I also drew him with a cane because why not.

Well, this was fun to shade. I tried a new shading technique where I put my lights on a separate layer and do that first instead of shading with the darker shades first and then putting the lights on after that. I really liked how it came out.

Regardless, I'll probably revisit this tomorrow and fix any problem areas I see with the shading.

Yeah, tell me about it. The wings certainly do make him look more of a threat.
Although the little wingless leprechaun look has its own charm if only because of the crazy faces he makes. =D

Ooo awesome. I was going to say I didnt remember him having wings, but then I read the description. Didn't remember him having a tail either, Batreaux didn't have that. I guess the reason why demons in SS look so different from demons in ST is that they're so far apart in time. Like, millions of years. If zoras can become a completely different species in hundreds of years, demons can lose their wings in millions of years. I do like this better than how the game did it though.

Ha ha, weeeell, one of the reasons I gave Chancellor Cole a tail is because I always saw his demon form as having one after the Malladus Cole monster at the end of the game sported one. I know it's not canon, but I think it looks cool and the picture looked kind of empty without it. I was always kind of disappointed in that, in the game, nothing's different about Cole between his human form and his demon form other than one has hats and beady eyes and the other doesn't. So I drew a picture of him with wings as a test and it really worked out favorably. =D It was fun just to experiment with a fanon idea.

And now that you mention it, that is a very good explanation as to why demons wouldn't really have wings anymore since Skyward Sword and Spirit Tracks sit on opposite ends on the timeline. Another explanation I like is that Cole is only a half-demon and has human blood in him too, if only because of how human he looks in demon form, especially compared to characters like Batreaux and Demise.

Demon/human? You mean...one parent demon and the other human? o_o Wow. The only way I can think that would be possible is if Batreaux fell for one of the Skyloft women after he was transformed into a human, had a family with her, and somewhere down the line, the demon genes showed up again. Maybe Cole has Batreaux as a distant ancestor?

And I see. I havent beaten ST yet, but I'm close.

I like to think that Cole is related to Batreaux, if only because it'd be heavily ironic that the incredibly kind, friendly demon who doesn't want to hurt anybody is a distant ancestor to a demon that tried to resurrect a dead demon god and destroy all of Hyrule. I'm sure Batreaux is proud of his great great great great (x100) grandson.
It's also supported by the fact that both of them have red hair and mustaches.

Nah, I was thinking more along the lines that there were pure demons all throughout Hyrule's history until multiple wars including the demon war in New Hyrule pretty much wiped them all out and that Cole himself was born during the war that sealed off Malladus.

Course that also works if Chancellor Cole is full demon. I'm open to multiple ideas involving him.

IKR? If Batreaux knew, he wouldn't be happy lol. "Son, I am disappoint."

I'm randomly wondering about Byrne. The game says he's a lokomo, but he doesn't have wheels for feet like Anjean and them, what's up with that?

...okay, now that you put that idea in my head, I have to draw that eventually.

I think the little karts the lokomo ride in aren't actually their feet, but just sacred vessels that they sit in to show their connection to the Spirit Tracks. Byrne just got his taken away because he had to betray his race like a jerk.

If you draw Batreaux saying "son, I am disappoint" to Cole that would be hilarious and awesome.

Huh, could be possible, but they also seem to never go out of the karts.

This is incredibly creepy, and I love it when you redo your old work! I love seeing all the little ways you've improved.

Cole was totally memorable, if only for the brash style of wearing TWO top hats. Despite being a Zelda game about trains, Spirit Tracks didn't really stand out to me in terms of characters or story overall, but this guy certainly did. (I also liked knowing that Linebeck had kids and passed his genes on to a grandson that looked exactly like him with a dumb hat. That made me happy.)

Oh man, me too. I'm kind of addicted to redoing art and I'm almost afraid I'm doing it too much instead of drawing new things, but whatever. What's the saddest thing for me is, unlike the other pieces I've redone, there's only a one and a half year difference between the two pictures and yet the 2011 piece, in all of its malformed, badly shaded glory, makes me want to set it on fire and then salt that portion of the Internet so it doesn't grow again. Iiiiick. (and yet for the most part I like my artwork in 2011 still; it's just that one picture that's an eyesore.)

I kind of want to redraw all of my Chancellor Cole pictures, actually. Or at least draw him in human form because his attempt at playing human amuses me. Bless his heart, he tries.

Spirit Tracks is probably the one Zelda game that's pretty much hit and miss concerning whoever plays it. I personally adore the absolute hell out of it and its setting (I love how New Hyrule has a train system that's basically chains holding a demon god down because apparently prisons holding back massive evil is the best place to run your commerce on), but at the same time I can totally see why people weren't that interested.

Plus I just really dug Chancellor Cole's design and the whole insanity behind it all. I know Hyrule has been established in multiple games to be kind of clueless, but there's a man with TWO hats, sharp teeth, and beady black eyes after their continent had a massive demon war. Seems like someone trustworthy enough to have a very powerful seat of government and has power over even the Princess and the guards. =D

Awww, thank you. I'm actually kind of glad that people can dig this picture without having played Spirit Tracks.
He's even less threatening in the actual game itself. I think one of the reasons Spirit Tracks doesn't get as much love as the other Zelda titles is because it's pretty hard to take a levitating midget with sharp teeth that sometimes bursts out into interpretative dance seriously.

Poor Cole. He tried so hard...

And thank you for the comments on the shading and the coloring. That honestly means a lot to me. =D

Alright then :)

Also,not a problem :D
Itīs not like I did much, I just love to talk about things I like once I get started ^^;

Just like my friend, I like to think that Cole isnīt a fullblooded demon. We actually both came to that conclusion before we knew each other. In my case, it was sorta because of Cole lacking Batreauxīs wings and overall looking slightly more human than him in-game and a bit of "wouldnīt it be funny if" which has since snowballed into a (semi-)extended headcanon about Cole and his past.

Hey, don't think it was nothing. Even just friendly conversation can be inspiring. Heck, I'm having a blast today just talking about Cole on this very deviation so things definitely worked out in everyone's favor. You guys are awesome and it's great having a discussion on one of my favorite characters. =D

I sort of flipflop in terms of whether or not Chancellor Cole is a fullblooded demon or not. I sort of have two theories involving that. One is that he is a full demon, but just got so used to being in disguise after years of doing so that even when he reveals himself, he doesn't reveal EVERYTHING. (I kind of like the idea that Cole is secretly fond of some aspects of humanity but doesn't want to say so in fear of looking like some human sympathizer or that he was chosen to resurrect the Demon King because he's the one who can pull off a human disguise better than anyone else) The other idea is that he's a half-demon; his father was a demon, his mom was a human, and his half-human heritage is the reason why he was able to slip into Hyrule undetected and kind of why he's so eager to suck up to Malladus.

But then again, I'm really fine with any ideas on the guy. Cole's one of those characters where really any headcanon can work as long as it makes a decent amount of sense.

I might go with the full demon idea or hiding the wings idea just because Cole with wings is oddly appealing. Don't know why. XD

Alright then ^///^

I canīt help but feel like Iīm annoying most of the time, which is why Iīm really grateful for you being so nice.

In my headcanon Coleīs father is a demon and his mother is a human, but it was his father who raised him. I sort of have his family mapped out to some degree.

I imagine that by the time of ST, Cole is one of the very few demons still alive. The intro story of ST says "Afterwards the Land was bereft of both demons and spirits" after all, both in the localized and original version ( though its not "spirits" in japanese but rather "god/gods").Because of that I donīt think many demons survived the war.
I even like to think that Cole doesnt know if there are any other survivors. I also like to think that his half-human heritage helped him survive the war, making him a tad more resisten to light-based weapons (like the Bow of Light), but just a tad.

But I really do see appeal of Cole being a full-blooded demon and as you said with Cole, most stuff works, so I donīt mind other interpretaions of him.

I really like that idea that Cole is one of the last remaining demons because it gives him a motive behind resurrecting Malladus beyond "I'm an evil monster who hates everything wholesome and good". His kind was basically slaughtered in the war. The most common treasure is the "demon fossil" which means New Hyrule is just covered in the corpses of his race. The only other demon you see besides Malladus and Cole in the game is the heavily destroyed skeletal remains left in a dungeon. When he reveals himself, he's basically called a monster in Hyrule Castle even though he knew these people for years. Probably, in his own twisted way, he sees it as payback and probably thought he was restoring the natural order of things after the humans came and imprisoned his species' king.
This is further supported by the fact that he basically says that Zelda made him hasten his plans, so he was probably carefully laying everything out to make the smoothest transition from Hylian rule to Demon rule with the least amount of bloodshed. He's probably the only Zelda villain that really didn't want a war since his family was killed in one.

...dang, now that I think of it this way, when he says "pretending to be a human is exhausting", he wasn't being flippant; instead, he realized that if anyone found out about his secret he would've been executed on the spot and people would've celebrated his death. Cole risked a lot.

Doesn't make him any less of a douche, but now he's a douche with an agenda.

Haha, "douche with an agenda", I like that :)

In my headcanon, Coleīs demon heritage is very important to him, he usually just ignores his connections to humans (heīs kinda racist like that), though he probably does ahve some fondness of a few human things, but heīs in denial about this stuff.

I imagine before he started worked at teh castle, life wasnt really easy for him. He probably basically lived on the streets for quite some time.

You know, I thought about this comment, realized I didn't really have my own personal thought of how Cole's life was before he entered Hyrule, and so I came up with an idea for his life before he worked at the castle. Judging by his comments of urchins, how he treats Link and the other guards with disdain, and his sucking up to Malladus, I like to think that Chancellor Cole came from a very affluent, powerful family filled with demons and they had been secretly influencing the aristocracy in Hyrule for centuries. If we go with the idea that Cole is a half-demon and not a full demon (I'm still kind of flipflopping in terms of which one I'm gonna use), the human side of his family is basically just another branch of aristocrats and basically his mom never knew that the family she had an arranged marriage to were demons. I just like the idea that while Cole might not be the most powerful villain in the Zelda list in both power or influence, but he'll certainly be the richest, with an estate of thousands of years worth of collected riches to his name. It probably also helped him get elected too.

So in addition to being racist (because I love the idea of him just hating humans even if he had connections to them), Chancellor Cole is also very classist too. He's the kind of politician who'd be all "maybe you should've thought of that before you became peasants!" if a family told him they were starving.

However, despite all that, I like to think he was a very competent politician and had Hyrule running perfectly smoothly and efficiently and he certainly didn't like that the princess was getting old enough to start undoing all of his hard work.

The first time I saw Chancellor Cole make his evil face, foreshadowing his role in the game, I nearly pantsed my crap. If it turned he was this, I would have had a heart attack. Chancellor Cole is my second favorite human-shaped Zelda bad guy right under Agahnim from A Link to the Past. If this is what it turned out his evil form was, that would have bumped him right up to the Top 5 Overall, Zelda Category, no question.

Byrne is dreamy and all, but he's not evil enough to even wear one hat, let alone two. Why, back when the chancellor was just getting started, they called him Two-Hats Cole. Except they didn't, because I just made that up.

Ah yes, the threat he makes to Link and his charming shark smile. What a nice person.
I like how much of a jerk Chancellor Cole is even before he makes his evil face. Dude wasn't even really trying to hide the fact that he was a bad guy in that game, the way he kept complaining about the ceremony.

I'm sure this would freak out a lot of players. I've seen people say that the faces Cole made in that game gave them nightmares. Adding wings would probably make him even creepier.

I'm so happy to see more people who like Chancellor Cole. And Agahnim for that matter, since I hardly ever see people mention him either. Cole needs more love, even if he hates everyone.

And Cole has heard so many jokes about his hats that he automatically tunes it out along with any comments about the fact that he resembles a leprechaun. The way he acts, I imagine that if you said anything about his two-hats, he'd probably turn around and walk away while ignoring your existence.

My whole reason that Cole didn't have wings was because he was never really a "True" demon, so to speak. ((As in, he has a bit of human blood in him, but in my headcanon, around the events of ST almost EVERY demon was about only around half-highblooded))

This is an exceptional picture, for a creative character!

You know, I actually really like that idea, that Cole is only half-demon and therefore doesn't get all the nice demon perks like a fancy set of wings. (and probably secretly resents it, but then again, he's also short so he's probably mad about a lot of things about his body) That way I can say that he's a distant relative of Sharp from Ocarina of Time without having to say that Sharp was a demon in disguise too. Of course this headcanon is purely based on how Sharp looks and how he acts in Majora's Mask (even if that's a different Sharp, but what the hey, maybe the OoT one was a jerk too) and because I like the idea that Cole is musically inclined and was the one that taught Zelda how to sing (after Teacher gives her some rather poor music lessons), not knowing that it'd backfire against him down the road.

Although considering how easily he floats and teleports, another idea is that he just doesn't bother with them and keeps them and his tail shapeshifted away. Gotta look his fanciest while resurrecting the demon god!

And you're welcome. Once again, I thank you for the conversation we had on my Spirit Track crossover picture, because that prompted me to draw this. Now I want to flood the world with ALL OF THE CHANCELLOR COLE because now I found a style I like on the guy since I wasn't too proud of my previous attempts at drawing this little butthole.

Nah, I meant Cole would know how to play the violin really well (partly because of the song "Makar's Awakening" from the Wind Waker soundtrack and partly because of the song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia") and would instruct Zelda on musical theory, but you know what? That idea's hilarious so I now just changed my headcanon so that he can play string instruments and sing opera. Especially considering how high pitched his voice is, it'd be funny if one of the guards heard this beautiful aria coming from the other side of the door and thought it was Zelda instead of the Chancellor.

Alternatively, he knows how to play whatever instrument is in his theme song. (the sitar? I'm not good with stringed instruments so I wouldn't know what exactly that is)

Yeah, it's sad that people wish Cole was more mutilated than he was in the game. He gets both of his horns sawed off and a sword through his head after getting turned into a giant manticore-like monster, I'm pretty sure he's had enough.

Darn, you just had to mention Ripto and harpsichords in the same comment, because now I'm picturing Chancellor Cole having the Chateau Ripto BGM as an alternative theme song.

Knowing Cole, his harpsichord is imported, one of the rarest of its kind, and he'll flip his wig if any ill-mannered urchins even do so much as breathe near it.

Yeah. I feel there's one thing to not like a character, but another to be really rude about your dislike of a character. I know the Wreck-it Ralph fandom sometimes forgets this rule regarding Vanellope. >_>

He'd have a heart attack if anyone touched it.

You know, the best part about a character is coming up with a background and au's with them.

Cole has a violin (a solid gold one that is probably worth more than all of Aboda Village might I add), a harpsichord, and a love for opera. I'm...really liking this idea a lot now and now have it applied to my personal idea for Cole. He's pretty cultured for someone who wants to issue in a new age of darkness and despair. And that's why I love him so much; Ganondorf is some dirty desert thief with no passion for the arts compared to Cole.

Now I'm picturing Chancellor Cole sitting in a plush armchair, sipping the finest imported teas while listening to a phonograph playing an opera version of Ballad of the Windfish. And people say this is the worst Zelda villain and draw hate art of him when he's oddly charming in his sheer insanity of it all.
