Quest for Camelot - If I Didn't Have You

I would love this world without you in it!

Hey guys! Long time no art. I am sad to admit that the last week of January was absolutely painful and killed my art drive.
I really don't want to mention it to random strangers online because it's pretty personal (I did talk about it to some friends though) but it involved a toxic, belligerent, just awful family member who uses the "but we're family" excuse one too many times and dealing with them multiple times in a single week left me rather frustrated and just unable to deal with art for a good while.
It's one thing to have an art block, it's another where just real-life issues make you so frustrated where you like "you know, I could work on stuff I owe...but I won't because videogames would cheer me up faster".

So these two kind of represent my recent state of mind. I'm not furious, I'm just really disappointed and irritated.

It...didn't help that Photoshop crashed a couple times on these guys and I lost several hours of work. Which is odd since this picture had way less layers to work with. What.

One of my "cool-off" movies in my library is the film Quest for Camelot. It's not the best animated film out there (opinion for it ranges from "awful" to "cute but not great") and yeah it's definitely Warner Bros. was trying to get some of that sweet, sweet Disney Renaissance money, but it's a beautifully animated film with really good voice acting, amazing sound direction, and a stunning art direction. The set design and background work is just...oh man, I wish this movie had an Art of book. Shame about all those executive decisions, though. From several interviews I've read, this movie is kind of an old shame to the animators and artists who worked on it.

I also got the soundtrack for Christmas so fanart of this movie was inevitable. I really dug this guy's (guys?) design. And I never see any fanart of Devon and Cornwall, the two-headed dragon voiced by Eric Idle and Mr. Potato Head. When one of the first results to pop up in the search engine is the Nostalgic Critic thumbnail, something is dreadfully off.

I was also inspired by Dwarfdraco's phenomenal work so I wanted to see if I could do something slightly similar. Less saturation, cel shadows...It isn't as successful at capturing an official look of a production still as they are, but I felt it was decent-enough practice. It was fun scaling back my shading a bit and trying to make it look like a production cel. I probably didn't scale back the shading enough (I have a tendency to go too dark still) but eh.

But yeah. Happy February. I'm planning on kicking my butt in gear and getting more work done. Also Majora's Mask is coming out and I have drawings to celebrate.

This movie was my childhood! I remember my dad renting it from the library and my bro and I would watch it over and over again! I finally watched it again after all those years and it’s still pretty good. Not perfect, but I find it enjoyable enough. Yeah, I honestly think this movie gets way too much hate, and it really doesn’t deserve it. Again, the film is not a masterpiece and yes, it tried to copy Disney maybe a little too much, but I think there’s quite a bit to praise about it.
