Ben Head and Frill Practice

Edit: Before anyone says, yes I realize the proportions are different between these two. I'm just playing around with frill size and facial shapes. Definitely going with the frill size on the left. It feels "better" somehow.

Ink this digitally, I said. It'll be fun, I said. I really need to learn how to ink faster, just these busts took a dang long time.

It did turn out better than I thought it would, at least.

I'm surprisingly hesitant when it comes to releasing artwork on my original characters in favor of fanart, but lately I've been noticing that people actually like my wereplantlizardhumanthing so I decided to ink and color some emotion sketches I did at work one day. I'm still trying to figure out how flexible I want to make Ben's frills since I've noticed in previous pictures that they come out a bit stuff.

I'm finally getting where I want his face to look like. I figure the wrinkles are pretty much always going to stay on his snout regardless of whether he's snarling or not. They give him character.

Ben's frills I imagine don't really have any bones in them so much as flexible cartilage and are very good indicators of his mood. I also imagine that he cannot turn them into vines unlike his wings. Couldn't tell you why he has them since they serve no evolutionary purpose but Ben is sort of an unholy mishmash of reptilian DNA anyways.
